Pasadena, MD – One of our own has come into a tough situation. Tommy Thompson, a long-time director and fastpitch softball coach, was in a horrific car accident on September 23rd, 2017 and was burned over 50% of his upper body. He has been in the Johns Hopkins Bayview Burn Intensive Care Unit since then. He has had multiple surgeries and procedures, including many skin grafts and the amputation of his left hand. He has overcome many obstacles including several infections. It is a miracle that he survived, but his fighting spirit and love for his family have sustained him.
Tommy is making progress in his recovery but the future is uncertain. He will most likely need additional surgeries, laser treatments, and physical therapy for the rest of his life. It is uncertain, at this point, when or if he will return to work. Even with insurance, bills for co-pays and tests and procedures that may not be covered are starting to add up. The funds that we hope to raise will allow Tommy and his wife, Judy, to focus on his recovery and ease the worry about a looming heavy financial burden.
Tommy truly loves softball and has treated those that he has met and coached in the sport as family. On any given weekend for years, many USSSA teams have affectionately referred to him as “Pop-Pop Tommy” if he was the director at their park. Through his generous spirit, he has paid it forward many times over throughout his life. He would give in a second to a friend or stranger in need.
We ask you to consider helping his family in their time of need. The softball community has always been one to come together to help one of its own and this family is in need of support.
