Pasadena, MD – Not even the wind and rain from the remnants of Hurricane Matthew could dampen USSSA East’s plans to help families with loved ones suffering from breast cancer. Despite having multiple sites cancelled due to the rain associated with what was Matthew, USSSA East recently donated $10,000 to support breast cancer charities in the region.

The 5th Annual USSSA Save Second Base Tournament, raises funds to help this cause by contributing a portion of team entry fees, collecting donations and selling breast cancer awareness merchandise where 100% of proceeds are contributed to the cause. This year, 175 teams took part in the tournament that was held at parks in Central Maryland and on the Lower Eastern Shore.

On December 6th, 2016, USSSA East presented a check for $7,500 to the Aiello Breast Center at the University of Maryland, Baltimore Washington Medical Center. This center provides all-encompassing breast care to women throughout the region. The Aiello Breast Center is accredited by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC), a program of the American College of Surgeons.

Later that same day, USSSA East presented a check for $2,500 to Women Supporting Women, a grass-roots organization founded in 1993 to provide awareness, education and support to all those affected by breast cancer. They service residents of the lower Delmarva Peninsula.

Since its inception in 2012, the USSSA Save Second Base Tournament has generated more than $32,000 in donations for several charities that assist those with breast cancer.
